Biography

 

 

 

Randy was the second child born to Gavin and Alice Preston: a couple wrought by years of “suspicious activities” tied to their militia. From an early age Randy, his older brother, and others were trained for holy and racial wars their group believed was coming (a line Gavin and Alice flaunted to increase and keep their membership).

 

When Randy was six his Father – whom he barely knew due to Gavin’s constant “trips” and prison stays – was executed by a group of Bikers for co-operating with authorities. Before long Gavin’s one time Lieutenant,Saul Beacher , had the movement trafficking guns across state lines.

 

Going well into his teens, Randy tore through his training while being home schooled by Alice. By 15, he could handle combat weapons, and situations, with the grace of a veteran soldier.

 

Still Randy, never shy about challenging the group’s motives– as he felt the “movement” betrayed his father’s memory- constantly fought with adults and peer alike. To avoid problems Alice sent him to live with her Brother, Michael.

 

While attending high school in the new state (though basically an isolationist Michael didn’t have the credentials or desire to home school Randy) the self conscious 16 year old fell in with a racially diverse group of “outsiders”who pursued little more than happiness, a fun time, a good party and the next high. He also became, by default, the group’s protector when needed. This association helped wean him off “superior” beliefs.   

 

Graduation arrived and everyone (as often happens after high school) went their separate ways. Needing income Randy connected with his Uncle’s drug running friends… taking to the mountains to do “work” he won’t openly discuss. From there (one can only guess) he went to “muscle work” for a mid level Gangster from Chicago then “travelled the world” (which may have been when his alleged mercenary soldier career began) before joining an internationally known “businessman’s” security team.   

 

 

Returning to the U.S, he adopted nomadic behavior patterns (job to job, girl- to- girl, party to party) that kept his sense of responsibility in flux. Eventually, after marrying his girlfriend of a year, Brittany Francs, he decided to become a cop.

 

Though raised in discipline (via his training from an early age) years of doing what he chose at his own pace changed his perspective. A clock-punching job, or any continuous regimen – even Marriage (he felt at the time)- was not a good fit. It didn’t surprise anyone that he washed out of academy… though the extra marital affairs leading to his divorce were shocks.

 

While in the academy he was befriended by a hard driven recruit named Jocasta Novarro (See: Jay Nova). Over time they stayed in touch and developed a big sister- little brother relationship (though they’re roughly the same age).

 

Later, when Randy came into some off-the-book money (he’s yet to disclose how he got it) he acquired his P.I credentials, brought into Light Star Investigations, and proceeded to work the closest thing to a legal, steady, job he’d ever had.

 

His lack of business acumen had Light Star pummeling towards ruin. Luckily, when “big sis” Jay quit the force she agreed to relocate and work for Light Star. He knew having an agent with her focus and dedication would be an asset. His plan backfired when Jay gradually took control of the practice before buying in as majority partner. Cases proved hard to come by until, urged on by Jay’s cocky assurance, they agreed to help desperate- sometimes powerful- people get out of fixes they couldn’t or wouldn’t go to the law with. As their rep for this grew so did their fortunes. The ensuing profit stream granted the freedom to work just a handful of months each year. In his mind the (usually temporary due to his spending habits) flexibility offered made the assumed risks – life or otherwise – worth it. Thus he attacked each and every case with dedication.

 

He has no idea his partner can read thoughts or how she stays two steps ahead of everyone (nor, at this point, does he care).

 

Still, as things progress he’ll learn there’s more to his partner than he realized and his past will cost him more than he’s willing to pay.

 

 

Skills

 

Due in part to his intense training Randy is an expert with firearms of many ranges and caliber. He is likewise trained in tracking, outdoor survival, urban combat and counter-insurgency techniques. Randy is also a top tier hand to hand combatant with pedigrees in Krav Maga, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Jujutsu, Judo and other styles honed by years of street fights. Though he likes to downplay this fact (to keep potential opponents off guard) Randy has the stamina, reflex capacity and endurance of a peak-conditioned athlete. On top of that – though whether this qualifies as a “skill” is up for debate – he can use his (self dubbed) “Hillbilly charm” to talk his way in,or out of, situations. This collection of attributes comes with a keen set of eyes and sharp mind that make him a top-notch investigator (when he chooses to be).
